Where to find sun from Tallinn
Tallinn has a long, dark, cold winter and a short mild summer. Helsinki, Riga and the Estonian coast are one climate with it. Nothing you can drive to is the south.
What you can reach
About 2 hours by car: Pärnu (about 1 h 45), Viljandi (about 1 h 45).
Further, still inside 5 hours: Riga (about 4 h), Tartu (about 2 h 15), Narva (about 2 h 45), Ventspils (about 4 h 15), Cēsis (about 3 h 30).
Inside a 4-hour door-to-door flight, and too far for that drive: Koszalin, Malmö, Klaipėda, Gothenburg. Four hours door to door stays in the Baltic and the cities just south of it. In January they are cold. A warm beach is a longer flight than this circle.
Car times are the straight-line estimate SunFinder starts from (~70 km/h), before a routed drive. A mountain road or a ferry takes longer. The flight circle is the same 4-hour limit the tool uses.
When to stay
Pärnu and the islands are the summer weekend, and they are not warmer than a good day in town. From October to April the honest answer is usually to stay, unless the flight is long enough to leave the Baltic.
Crossing the water
The Helsinki ferry is about two hours across the Gulf of Finland. The weather on the quay in Helsinki matches the weather you left.
