Where to find sun from Helsinki
Helsinki has a real winter and a bright, mild summer. The sea takes the edge off the continental cold and does nothing about the darkness.
What you can reach
About 2 hours by car: Lahti (about 1 h 30), Porvoo (about 40 min), Kotka (about 1 h 45), Raseborg (about 1 h 15).
Further, still inside 5 hours: Tampere (about 2 h 15), Turku (about 2 h 15), Jyväskylä (about 3 h 15), Kuopio (about 4 h 45), Pori (about 3 h 15).
Inside a 4-hour door-to-door flight, and too far for that drive: Koszalin, Klaipėda, Riga, Gothenburg. The four-hour circle is the Baltic and its neighbours. Warmth starts well beyond it.
Car times are the straight-line estimate SunFinder starts from (~70 km/h), before a routed drive. A mountain road or a ferry takes longer. The flight circle is the same 4-hour limit the tool uses.
When to stay
A drive inland is colder, not clearer. Summer weekends in the archipelago can be the whole trip. From late autumn to early spring, staying is the honest answer unless the flight is long enough to leave the Baltic.
Crossing the water
The ferry to Tallinn takes about two hours on the water and lands in the same weather. It is a good city trip. It is not a sun trip.
