Where to find sun from Vienna
Vienna is continental: cold winters, hot summers, and a short spring. The Hungarian plain to the east brings the same heat, not an escape from it.
What you can reach
About 2 hours by car: Bratislava (about 47 min), Brno (about 1 h 30), Gyor (about 1 h 30), Nitra (about 1 h 45).
Further, still inside 5 hours: Budapest (about 3 h), Prague (about 3 h 30), Krakow (about 4 h 45), Wroclaw (about 4 h 45), Zagreb (about 3 h 45).
Inside a 4-hour door-to-door flight, and too far for that drive: Salerno, Durres, Split, Livorno. Four hours door to door reaches the central Mediterranean. That is milder in winter. It is still not the Red Sea.
Car times are the straight-line estimate SunFinder starts from (~70 km/h), before a routed drive. A mountain road or a ferry takes longer. The flight circle is the same 4-hour limit the tool uses.
When to stay
In July the city is often the hot place, and a lake nearby does not cool the weekend by much. In winter the Alps are for snow. The Adriatic is a long day in the car, and in January it is for walking, not swimming.
