Where to find sun from Salzburg
Salzburg is an Alpine-edge city: sharp winters, pleasant summers, and rain that comes off the mountains. Munich is close and climatically the same.
What you can reach
About 2 hours by car: Munich (about 1 h 45), Linz (about 1 h 30), Innsbruck (about 2 h).
Further, still inside 5 hours: Vienna (about 3 h 30), Prague (about 3 h 45), Zagreb (about 4 h 30), Stuttgart (about 4 h 15), Nuremberg (about 3 h 15).
Inside a 4-hour door-to-door flight, and too far for that drive: Salerno, Toulon, Split, Livorno. The short-flight circle includes the northern Adriatic and northern Italy. In summer you can often drive that far. In winter only the flight moves the temperature.
Car times are the straight-line estimate SunFinder starts from (~70 km/h), before a routed drive. A mountain road or a ferry takes longer. The flight circle is the same 4-hour limit the tool uses.
When to stay
A two-hour drive is Bavaria or the lake district. South, the passes go into colder air. Venice is a long drive and, outside summer, not warm enough to be the point of the trip.
