Where to find sun from Innsbruck
Innsbruck is a valley city with Alpine winters and a summer that stops at the valley walls. South of the Brenner the language changes, and so does the climate.
What you can reach
About 2 hours by car: Munich (about 1 h 30), Augsburg (about 1 h 45), Salzburg (about 2 h), Trento (about 2 h).
Further, still inside 5 hours: Milan (about 3 h 45), Stuttgart (about 3 h 15), Nuremberg (about 3 h 30), Zürich (about 3 h), Bologna (about 4 h 30).
Inside a 4-hour door-to-door flight, and too far for that drive: Salerno, Toulon, Split, Livorno. You do not need four hours in the air to reach a milder climate. The Brenner does it by car. Use the flight when the pass is the wrong season.
Car times are the straight-line estimate SunFinder starts from (~70 km/h), before a routed drive. A mountain road or a ferry takes longer. The flight circle is the same 4-hour limit the tool uses.
When to stay
In winter the valley is for snow, and a drive north to Munich is not toward the sun. The trip that changes the weather goes over the pass toward Bolzano and the Italian lakes. In July the valley itself is often enough.
