Where to find sun from Zurich

Zurich has a mild lakeside climate squeezed against colder Alps. Fog sits on the lake in autumn and winter. Summer days are warm, and the mountains an hour away are a different season.

What you can reach

About 2 hours by car: Freiburg (about 1 h 15), Basel (about 1 h), Bern (about 1 h 15), Reutlingen (about 2 h).

Further, still inside 5 hours: Munich (about 3 h 30), Milan (about 3 h), Turin (about 3 h 45), Frankfurt (about 4 h 15), Stuttgart (about 2 h 15).

Inside a 4-hour door-to-door flight, and too far for that drive: Barcelona, Pescara, Toulon, Livorno. A four-hour flight from Zurich reaches Rome's latitude and the Adriatic. In winter that is milder. It is not a beach holiday unless you fly further.

Car times are the straight-line estimate SunFinder starts from (~70 km/h), before a routed drive. A mountain road or a ferry takes longer. The flight circle is the same 4-hour limit the tool uses.

When to stay

Driving into the Alps makes the weekend colder. The climate change worth the car is south, toward the Italian lakes. If the lake is already clear, stay.
