Munich is one of the better cities in Europe to chase the sun by car, and one of the easier cities to fool yourself from in winter. South of you the land rises, then drops toward lakes and a warmer sea. That geography is useful for half the year. It does not move the Mediterranean onto the A8 in January.
Winter: the car goes the wrong way
From November to February, a drive into the Alps is a drive into colder air. Innsbruck can be beautiful in a frost and still be a worse weather day than a mild, grey afternoon in town. The lakes on the Italian side are not a beach, and they are often not even milder by enough to matter once the pass and the forecast are honest.
Winter sun from Munich is a flight.
- A long weekend in the mid-teens: Rome, the southern Adriatic, Málaga, Lisbon. A different city, not a beach. Worth it when Munich is sitting at 2 °C under low cloud, and not automatically worth it when Munich has a bright, cold high.
- Around 20 °C, with fewer surprises: the south of the Canary Islands. Far enough that a Friday-to-Sunday is mostly travel. Better as a week.
- A winter beach: Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh. Warm sea, rare rain, and the longest journey of the three. Agadir matches the Canaries more than it matches Egypt.
The comparison is in winter sun you can actually reach and Canaries, Agadir or the Red Sea. A ranking that leads with the southern hemisphere in December is not a Munich ranking.
Spring and early summer: the car starts to work
By April and May the drive south is the point of living in Munich. A few hours reaches the Alpine valleys, which can be clear when the foreland is under a pile of cloud. A longer drive, roughly four hours, reaches Lake Garda. The Adriatic — Trieste, the Istrian coast, and then further — is a serious day at the wheel and a plausible long weekend, not a spontaneous Saturday.
What you are buying in these months is often light and a milder afternoon, not swimming weather. The lakes are cold in May. The Adriatic becomes a beach later than the postcard suggests. If the swim is the goal, check when the sea is warm enough before you book the coast for early June.
This is also the season when “closer and good enough” beats “further and perfect”. A bright 18 °C at Garda can be a better Saturday than a 24 °C forecast you will enjoy for two hours after a six-hour drive. How far is worth driving is the general rule. From Munich, 300 km is the Alps and the nearer lakes. It is not Venice every time, and it is never Sicily.
High summer: you may already have the sun
In July and August the search flips. Munich can be warm and stormy, with a fine morning and a violent late afternoon. Escaping south can mean escaping into a more stable sky, and it can also mean 35 °C in a Po Valley town that won on sunshine hours and lost on being pleasant.
Prefer, in order:
- a lake or a valley with a breeze, if the storms are the problem,
- the Adriatic or the northern lakes, if you want a classic summer weekend by car,
- a flight only if you specifically want the hot south, or a cooler Atlantic coast.
If the thermometer at home is already in the high 20s and the weekend is dry, staying is a legitimate result. More sun further south is not an improvement. It is heat. Summer sun without the heatwave lists the places that stay pleasant, some of which are north of you, not south.
Autumn: the last easy car trips
September is kind to this drive. The Adriatic and Garda are still warm, the sea is often warmer than it was in June, and the worst of the heat has passed. October shortens the list: the lakes are for walking, swimming becomes a bonus, and a wet week in the mountains is an ordinary week. By November you are back in the winter rule.
This weekend, from Munich
Set the start to Munich and keep the radius honest.
- This weekend by car, up to 300 km for the Alps and the nearer lakes.
- A longer car weekend, up to about 500 km, when you are willing to spend the Friday on the road toward Garda or the top of the Adriatic: 500 km by car.
- The next week by plane, up to 4 hours when the car radius is all the same grey, or all the same heat.
Read the verdict against home, not against the sunniest place in the catalogue. An extra hour of sun in Innsbruck is not a reason to go in January. A still, warm September day at the lake is.
