Best Sunny Weekend Destinations in Europe (Short Breaks)

How to pick a weekend destination that is likely to be sunny, which places suit a two- or three-day break, and why the drive you can make today may beat the flight you planned last month.

A weekend is short. If it rains, there is no second chance. That changes how you should choose: reliability and travel time matter more than for a two-week holiday, and flexibility beats any "top 10" list. This guide covers both the classic sunny weekend destinations and a smarter way of deciding at short notice.

The weekend rule: travel time is expensive

On a two-night break, every hour spent travelling is taken from your time in the sun. A useful rule is that the one-way journey should not exceed about a quarter of your waking time away. For a Friday evening to Sunday evening trip, that means roughly 3–4 hours door to door.

Remember that "flight time" is not travel time. Getting to the airport, security, boarding, the flight and the transfer at the other end usually add up to at least twice the flight itself. A 2.5-hour flight is typically a 5–6 hour journey. That is why, for many people, a 2–4 hour drive or train ride to a sunnier region beats a flight on a short weekend.

Destinations that suit a weekend

These places combine good weather for much of the year with direct flights from many European cities and plenty to do in a compact area.

Within about 2–3 hours' flight of central Europe

  • Nice and the Côte d'Azur. Bright and mild from spring to autumn, and even winter is often sunny. Seaside promenade, old town and day trips along the coast by train.
  • Barcelona and Valencia. Classic city and beach combinations. Valencia is drier and slightly sunnier; both are at their best from April to June and September to October.
  • Mallorca. Palma works as a city break, and the island has excellent walking and cycling in spring and autumn.
  • Rome and Naples. Sunny and warm from May to October; outside summer, the combination of culture and mild weather is hard to beat.
  • Cagliari and southern Sardinia. Among the sunniest places in Italy, with quiet beaches outside July and August.

Around 3–4 hours' flight

  • Málaga and Seville. Good nearly all year: warm in spring and autumn, mild in winter, very hot inland in summer.
  • Lisbon and the Algarve. Excellent light and pleasant temperatures for much of the year, with the Atlantic keeping summers fresher than the Mediterranean.
  • Malta. Compact, walkable and sunny, with one of the highest numbers of sunshine hours in Europe.
  • Athens and Crete. Reliable sun from late April to October.

Beyond 4 hours

  • The Canary Islands are the safest winter weekend sun, but at 4–5.5 hours' flight from much of Europe they are better suited to a long weekend of three or four nights.

City or beach?

City breaks are more weather-proof. If a front passes through, museums, markets and restaurants still make it a good weekend. Choose a city if the forecast is uncertain.

Beach weekends need the forecast on your side. Pick them only when the forecast shows several sunny, calm days in a row, and prefer sheltered bays out of the prevailing wind.

When each region is at its best

  • Spring (April–May): southern Spain, Portugal, Sicily, Malta, Crete. Warm but not hot, with long days and fewer crowds.
  • Early summer (June): almost the whole Mediterranean; also the Baltic and North Sea coasts on high-pressure weekends.
  • High summer (July–August): coasts rather than inland cities, which can exceed 35 °C. The Atlantic coasts of France, Spain and Portugal are more comfortable than the eastern Mediterranean.
  • Autumn (September–October): the sea is at its warmest and the heat has eased, making it perhaps the best season for Mediterranean weekends.
  • Winter: the Canaries, Madeira, Andalusia and Cyprus. See warmest cities in winter.

A smarter approach: let the forecast choose

Lists of sunny places are based on averages. A weekend is a single draw from the weather. A place with 3,000 sunshine hours a year can have a wet weekend, and a place with 1,800 can have a gorgeous one. Instead of fixing the destination first and hoping for the weather, flip it around:

  1. On Monday or Tuesday, look at the weekend forecast across everywhere you could reach. Forecasts four to five days ahead are good for the general pattern.
  2. Shortlist two or three candidates that look clearly better than home.
  3. On Wednesday or Thursday, check again and decide. Book accommodation with free cancellation where possible.
  4. The evening before, confirm the forecast and pack.

This is exactly what SunFinder is designed for. Set "This weekend", your transport and how far you are willing to go, and it compares every place within reach against your own forecast. Often the best option is closer than you expected: a coastal town two hours away can be in full sun while the city stays under low cloud. Try it for this weekend by car within 300 km.

Weekend packing for changeable weather

  • A light waterproof jacket and one warm layer, even in summer.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen, which you need from spring to autumn, and in the south all year.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Weekends are usually spent on foot.
  • A small daypack for taking layers on and off.

Keep it to hand luggage. It saves time at both ends of the journey, which is the scarcest resource on a weekend.
